graduation day
Friday, April 25, 2008 10:30 PM
i graduated today from my basic speed reading class. yahoo!
it's really not much of an achievement because when you enroll, you're guaranteed graduation. whether you did well or not. needless to say, the class was extremely helpful. you do get to see results. i read faster already. but like everything else, you need to practice if you plan to make the most of your new skills.
they were telling us that the class works like a seesaw - only one side gets to be on top and the other has to suffer a little bit. eventually, it balances out. unfortunately, i think the seesaw is still a bit lopsided. there's speed, yes. but comprehension. not so much. they explained to us that since there is limited time in class (3 hours), the technique to better comprehension cannot be readily applied. the technique to better comprehension by the way, is MRP. or multiple reading principle. it only means that you read it lots of times so you can retain more information. it's all in the workbook.
they highly encourage us to take the advanced speed reading classes. it looks intersting. maybe next summer?
for the last day of the class, we talked about flexibility, we made more recalls, and we had more team activities. during break, we had pansit and zest-o. haha. extra special, i suppose? we had another facilitator this time. because you see, it went like this:
- Module 1 - Ms. Tami
- Module 2 - Ms. Tracy (the real facilitator)
- Module 3 - Ms. Trisha
- Module 4 - Ms. Tracy
- Module 5 - Ms. Katz
apparently, ms. tracy came down with food poisoning and was feeling "dehydrated" a lot. it doesn't make much of a difference. they all seem to have the syllabus down pat. on the other hand, we had to introduce ourselves 4 times throughout the whole program. so by now, i pretty much know all of my classmate's names. we're 25, all in all.
have i mentioned that we were split into teams?
- Team 1 - Cute Dogs
- Team 2 - Wild Cats (my team)
- Team 3 - Gogo! Tigers
- Team 4 - Vicious Lions
we had lots of group activities and we were given points. the team with the most points by the end of the week will win a prize. the cute dogs bagged first place. they got pens. grreat. we came in third. not so bad. at least we weren't in the last place. :D
they didn't give us our PRF's (progress report...something) back. i kinda wanted it back because i wanna see if i can improve. oh, well.
i really enjoyed myself. i definitely recommend it. :D

the prosec dictionary:
homework - home delights! (because you can't help but say it with a smile!!)
quizzes/tests - paper games! XD
things are going well at prosec. it's getting more and more challenging. it's still a hassle to go there and to go back home. i really wish it could be easier. it's so far away from where we live. ughhh.

prosec
Monday, April 21, 2008 7:32 PM

today was my first day at PROSEC. the school which teaches people how to speed-read. the day did not start well. i woke up at around 6AM. that is so insane because i need to be there at 9AM. anyway, i got ready and i was ready by 7AM. the time my mom and i were supposed to be leaving the house and making our way over to ortigas. we ended up getting delayed because my mom had tons of orders to her employees. when we finally got to leaving home, my mom tells me we have to see one of the employees off to the store because she's carrying lotsa moolah. we went to cubao and got on the MRT. that was so crazy. it seemed like everyone in the metro manila area decided to take the train! my mom and i couldn't even get inside. we eventually gave up. the train was way too crowded and more people kept coming in.
after all that, we killed an hour, at least. so it's 8AM and we are nowhere near ortigas. my mom decided to just hell with it and take a cab. it took a while to get one. we had tons of competition. needless to say, we got to PROSEC. i came in at around 9:10. not bad, considering the misadventures we had.
the first activity of the day was to introduce your partner to the class - your partner being the person beside you. the person i sat next to is this 13 year old boy. we eventually got to talking because we had to introduce each other. i found out that he goes to la salle greenhills, likes the internet and playing sports, failed kindergarten 1, got accelerated to 1st year from grade 6 (ugh. he skipped grade 7), and other things i forgot. there were other latecomers. there was an empty seat beside me and a girl eventually occupied it. she's a college freshman at UP. she's 16 and lives in Cavite. her brother and her cousin are taking the course with her. she went to Elizabeth Seton for high school. aside from high school kids, there were also some adults. 4 of them actually. there's 24 of us in the class.
we eventually got to the reason we wre there, to learn to speed read. we had a diagnostic test first "to determine how fast we can read before the course starts". our comprehension was also tested. it was fun. the teacher is ms. tami :). she's very animated so it wasn't boring. after the diagnostic tests, we talked about the 3 reasons why people read slowly. after that we had our break. they gave us snacks - chips delight and zest-o. i don't think it sat well with me. my stomack hurt afterward :(. my partner didn't get any food. hmmm. i wonder why. after break, we learned a basic technique to read faster - to use the magic wand!!! which is our finger! yay!
we spent the rest of the lesson doing that. and so ends the first day at prosec. gawd. i wish it's easier to think of something to wear everyday. bleh.
woohoo. advertise.

messed up
Thursday, April 17, 2008 11:36 PM
i was my mother's slave for the whole day. she just had me doing a bunch of stuff that i'd rather not do. curses.
i'm starting at
PROSEC next week. that should be interesting. i'm actually gonna be doing something worthwhile this summer. or maybe it will just end up wasted. who knows? i can't tell yet. the prosec thing will go on for 5 days, straight. i hope that it will be helpful to me. i would be excited about it but once again, a problem just presented itself. it will be kinda difficult to get there. it's pretty far from where we live - ortigas. another thing is, the class is from 9AM to 12PM. i mean, i have been known to wake up at around 1PM. so if i am to go to this class, i should probably be up and running by 7AM. oh no.
gawd. now i'm getting nervous about it. ughhhh.
yesterday, mom and i went to my orthodontist for another consultation. we got all the x-rays done yesterday because my mom is "very busy" and she cannot take me on any other day. so, that's done. all that's left is the braces and surgery part. grreat. gawd. i hope mom gets off my back tomorrow. i sooo need to relax.
